The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer behind many legendary styles worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.

His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and theatrical styles, including the pastel suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."

This news arrives shortly after he presented his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing menswear at Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in shaping body-hugging looks established him as a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he commenced designing ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included a number of outfits for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.

Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: A hallmark of his work.
  • Dramatic Impact: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The fashion world mourns the loss to a true visionary whose legacy on fashion and music remains profoundly felt.
