Battlefield 6's Casual Game Mode Ignites Intense Debates Over AI Players, Experience Points, and Queue Times
Over the weekend, Battlefield Studios launched a fresh playlist titled Relaxed Breakthrough. To put it simply, this option mirrors the regular Breakthrough setup but includes several notable changes:
- Every squad has just 8 human participants, with the remaining made up of AI-controlled opponents.
- Activities done by human gamers award full XP, while AI activities provide lower rewards.
- Only two locations are available: Cairo Siege and Empire State.
- Features like Player tags, achievements, and career stat updates are disabled.
So essentially, this mode lives up to its title: it's a laid-back version of Breakthrough. At face value, one could assume there's nothing wrong, as it gives more options for players looking for different ways to enjoy the game. But, gaming history have taught us anything, it is that you can't please everyone. Which is to say, a lot of Battlefield 6 fans are upset.
Player Responses: Anger to Praise
"People want real players. Don't repeat the errors of your competitors," states one reply to the official announcement. "Truly disappointing concept," says a different user. Meanwhile, on the Battlefield subreddit, one user notes, "It's unclear where we are headed with this title," and another lists all the issues they believe to be broken in the game: "Fix bugs, address drone issues, fix IVF rockets, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, fix awful hit registration. We do not require this bot mode."
On the other hand, amid the criticism, some gamers explaining how much they're liking the recent addition. "It's enjoyable to warm up, real players prevent it from being a complete grind but it's very relaxed," reads a forum post. "The community fails to see that there are players who actually go outside and don't play this title 24/7. Let them find a middle ground," states another. A response on Twitter clarifies that as they're "a parent gamer with busy schedules, this is perfect for me," while someone else praises the mode for "avoiding intense competition."
Constructive Concerns and Player Input
All that said, players have constructive reasons to criticize Casual Breakthrough. A few folks have pointed out that it will make wait times even longer for other modes because of the sheer number of options currently available. On a similar note, some areas often face AI-filled matches in the current modes. Additionally, it appears a little backwards that the mode does not begin without a minimum number of human gamers, even though it focuses mostly on combat against bots.
Finally, one of the biggest grievances is that a previous feature was meant to offer complete rewards, including AI matches, but that was removed when they attempted to eliminate bot farms from the system. So this new playlist seems like the community compromising in the middle, according to a Reddit comment. A different user describes this addition as the devs "making a mistake so hard, I experienced so much fun in the initial release, why did they feel the need to change it?"
Looking Ahead: Will Changes Be Made?
If the development team has demonstrated something so far with Battlefield 6, it is that they're listening and acting on player input. Assignments that were overly hard got fixed very quickly, as did the specific battle pass objectives. It is likely that, should analytics shows this new playlist is underperforming to their standards, they won't be shy to change it again.
