Israelis have assembled throughout the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-conducted attack on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations continued in the neighboring country over an end to the war in Gaza.

The incident saw over 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured away to Gaza as captives. It was the single most fatal day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.

Israel reacted by launching a armed campaign in Gaza which has taken over 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are regarded as accurate by the United Nations and other world agencies.

"Our aggressive opponents have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," the leader added on that day.

He also vowed to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the return of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will not present a danger to Israel".

Memorial Gatherings Across Israel

The national leadership postponed state memorials until 16 October - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still were held around the country on Tuesday.

A memorial ceremony for the families of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas incident was held in Tel Aviv. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast on Israeli television channels.

A period earlier, a moment of silence was held around the country.

Ceasefire Discussions in Egypt

Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' delegations gathered in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to discuss the conditions of the proposal.

A high-ranking delegate involved in the discussions indicated that an late session of negotiations started at 19:00 Cairo time.

The source stated the earlier meeting ended without concrete outcomes, because of conflicting views over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not resume combat after the initial stage of the agreement.

He noted that the talks are "challenging and have still not produce any significant progress," but noted that intermediaries are making efforts to reduce the differences between the conflicting groups.

In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in the capital, people gathered to demonstrate their backing for the families of the abducted. Israel states 48 continue in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be alive.

Demonstrator Atalia Regev stated: "We need do any agreement required for the abducted to be released. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be safe."

Surveys now regularly indicate that about the majority of Israelis want the war to finish in return for the liberation of the hostages.

Palestinian Circumstances

At the site of the music event, those paying respects assembled to pay their respects.

From that location, the sound of aerial bombardments and shelling could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people indicated the heavy Israeli shelling persisted.

"Me and my three children are fearful of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are resting together, embracing, particularly my smallest child who puts his head on me the entire evening."

"Continuously we look at the updates to see what happened. And I'm worried that this halt will not be achieved and that the fighting will resume to us."
