New York Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during a recent discussion.

“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His family, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”

It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he has been listed as in critical but steady condition.

“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, he felt really upbeat. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”

Authorities issued video stills Monday of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was the intended victim. There were no additional victims according to reports.

The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday morning about halfway between the famous arena and the iconic square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The assailant escaped.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since the news broke. The coach said that Boyd and his wife just had a child.

“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn remarked. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and my priority is his well-being. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.

He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in March and was projected as an important component of an improved special teams group under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on 2 August and had to be helped off.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while healing from his surgery.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “Certainly, he comes to the games all the time. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of UT in the 2019 draft. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
