Over 42 million US residents are anxiously awaiting to learn if the federal government will use contingency money to provide billions of dollars in nutritional support.

Judges gave the Trump administration until Monday noon Eastern Time (17:00 GMT) to provide details about how it intends to fund the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly called food stamps.

Funding for the program is still uncertain due to the extended US government shutdown resulting from the inability of Congress to approve a budget agreement.

Despite the court decision or alternative solution, countless citizens have gone without essential food assistance since money for the program expired on the weekend.

Local Management and Federal Funding

While state governments manage the benefits, the initiative relies on funds from the federal government, which has been without budget and closed since 1 October.

Federal judges in two northeastern states determined that the US Department of Agriculture needs to employ $5.25 billion (four billion pounds) in emergency funds to provide some funding to recipients on Snap.

Snap requires about $8bn per month.

Court Actions and Government Response

President Trump previously said he had directed administration attorneys to inquire with the judiciary how the government could legally finance Snap, stating: "Although we get prompt direction, it will unfortunately be delayed."

Sunday, the Treasury Secretary said in a television appearance that the president wanted to hear from the judiciary about how to reallocate funds lawfully to support Snap payments but they could be distributed as early as mid-week.

"There's a process that has to be followed," Bessent said. "Therefore, we've got to determine what the process is."

Recently, the USDA said it will not distribute food assistance funds starting 01 November because of the government shutdown, stating: "The well has run dry."

Legal Actions and State Responses

Numerous states and the Washington DC filed suit against the government over the food-aid freeze and contended that they have a statutory duty to maintain the initiative in their areas.

Separately, municipalities and charitable organizations also initiated legal action.

Amid doubts surrounding government nutrition money, several states said they would employ their own money to support food assistance.
