The Former French President Set to Write Jail Diary Chronicling Two Dozen Days Incarcerated

The ex-president of France will soon publish a personal account in the coming weeks titled Notes from a Cell, chronicling his time spent behind bars.

The revelation came shortly after Sarkozy gained freedom as he contests the guilty verdict on charges of criminal conspiracy in a case to obtain political financing linked to the leadership of the late Libyan dictator.

Prison Experience: Inner Thoughts

“Behind bars one sees little, with little to occupy time,” he notes in one passage, suggesting the book centers around his thoughts during solitary confinement instead of a broader observation of the overcrowded and crisis-hit correctional facilities in the country.

“I forget silence, which is missing in that facility, where noise is a lot to hear,” he adds. “The din is alas constant. But, just like the desert, personal reflection grows stronger while incarcerated.”

Release Hearing: Describing the Ordeal

While appealing for release, the former leader had appeared via screen from inside the facility, depicting prison life as gruelling. He stated to the judge: “I wish to commend the correctional officers, who are exceptionally humane, easing this ordeal bearable – because it is a nightmare.”

“I didn’t expect at this stage of life, I’d be in prison. It’s a hardship that has been imposed on me. I admit it’s difficult, it’s very hard. It affects one on any prisoner due to its intensity.”

First of Its Kind

He, the ex-head of state for a five-year term, was the first past president in the European Union and the first postwar leader of France to serve time in prison.

Before entering jail he declared he planned to utilize the opportunity to compose an account.

Books in Prison

Unconfirmed is did he manage to review and analyze the three books he brought with him: a biography of Jesus in two parts plus the novel by Dumas The Count of Monte Cristo, a plot where a wrongfully accused individual is sentenced to jail but escapes to seek vengeance.

Daily Reality

He was placed in isolation due to safety concerns in a room approximately nine square meters including private facilities at the correctional facility in the city. Guards stayed in the next cell.

Reports indicated that he consumed only yoghurts during his stay worried that any food may have been contaminated. Options were available for self-catering but he turned this down, as per accounts. Not known is if the memoir includes his dietary choices.

Legal Perspective

The legal representative, who saw him regularly every day while he was in prison, stated during proceedings he would be safer released compared to inside. “He received menacing messages, heard shouts at night and the urgent intervention in an adjacent room when a prisoner self-harmed.”

Charges and Sentence

His incarceration began on 21 October after a French court imposed five years in prison for criminal conspiracy in connection with efforts to secure election financing for his presidential bid.

He disputes the charges and has appealed against the verdict, and another court case planned for the coming spring.
