The network's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Significant Extension for Two More Seasons.
In October of last year, Adult Swim saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the network launched a fresh animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. During a period often characterized by cynicism, this show's sincerity found an audience and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.
"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."
A President's Endorsement
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and championed its peculiarly charming appeal.
"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about watching this endearing family navigate their everyday routines.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to help comedy break out of its prevailing sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
The Path Forward
Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to experience the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
