What We Know Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Shooting

No fewer than 16 people perished and more than 40 sustained injuries when attackers shot at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police have labeled a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, authorities have announced the death toll remains at 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were admitted to hospital.

Those who died are still awaiting publicly named, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Known as a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the moments leading up to the attack, saying they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

In a statement, a senior official expressed that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed in the incident, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, many remain receiving treatment, with five in serious condition. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
